Are you planning a trip to the U.S.? Here’s a breakdown of some key things to know for a successful U.S. Tourist visa application, especially if you’re a Nigerian passport holder.
Be Early!
This might seem obvious, but arriving early for your interview is crucial. Interviews can start sooner than scheduled, so being there 30 to 45 minutes early can be a lifesaver!
**Consistency is Key **
Everything you answer on your DS-160 application needs to match what you say during your interview. There’s no going back to check your application after submitting it.
Here’s a ninja trick: Take screenshots of your application while filling it out, or record your answers somewhere. You can also save the application as you go. This way, if there’s any gap in memory between filling it out and the interview, you can refresh yourself and ensure your answers are consistent. For example, you can put a piece of information while filling out the application, and end up giving a wrong response during the interview – this is not ideal! You must remember everything from your application.
Don’t Toss Those Expired Passports!
Bring all your old passports, even the expired ones. This is the only way to verify your travel history if you mentioned it in your application. Without them, your visa could be denied. For example, a client was asked for old passports during her interview, imagine if she didn’t take them along.
Proof of Funds: Better Safe Than Sorry
Many people ask about proof of funds. In our experience, a good rule of thumb is to have a final balance of at least 1.5 to 2 times what your entire trip is expected to cost. While they might not ask to see your documents, it’s better to be prepared just in case.
Here’s the Official Stuff
You can apply at https://portal.ustraveldocs.com/. The visa fee is currently $190. Once approved, you’ll pick up your visa at a DHL office after receiving an email notification. You can get an email in 3 days and receive a 5-year visa, which is typical for Nigerian passport holders.
So there you have it! With these tips and some preparation, you’ll be well on your way to exploring the U.S. in no time!
